Grab Bar

Purpose: Grab bars are utilized to promote safety and allow an individual or caregiver to hold a stable surface while they are standing or moving surface to surface. It also may be used to help maintain balance and prevent a ball.

Height Range: Grab bars can be placed at any height. Grab bars come in a variety of lengths.

Weight Range: ADA ruling requires public grab bars to support up to 250LBs. It is recommended to check the weight capacity of the bar.

Insurance Coverage: Insurance coverage varies. FSA eligible.

Availability: Medical stores, Amazon, Major pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens) (When purchasing equipment from Amazon, be sure to read the manufacturers return policy as medical equipment might have different policies)

Critical Information

For the purpose of this document, we will be discussing grab bars which are mounted onto a secure wall. We often get asked about suction cup grab bars and do not recommend they be utilized for the highest level of safety and fall prevention.

It is important that a grab bar is installed on a secure surface (usually a wall). It is recommended to have it installed by someone who is confident and proficient with this type of installation in order to avoid any safety issues.


Insurance Coverage

Medicare Part B may cover the cost of the grab bars, but a medical professional must provide documentation that they are medically necessary. Some Medicare Advantage plans will cover grab bars, but you need to check with your specific coverage plan as they vary. Most private insurances will not cover grab bars; however, it is worth inquiring if they will consider coverage with a healthcare professional’s letter of medical necessity.
