Does the brain heal?

YES! The brain is a highly plastic organ – that means it can easily be “shaped and is pliable”. In our world, that is referred to as neuroplasticity! The ability of the brain to constantly adapt to changes in its environment. This holds true even after an injury like a stroke. Recent research states that the brain's activity actually increases following a stroke to help stabilize the weakened areas. Additionally, research has found that receiving therapy during the early stages of a stroke helps the brain to heal either by causing repair of the cells at the site of injury or by creating new neural connections and pathways.

This is especially true when environmental factors like physical/occupational/speech therapy intervene to help promote this healing! This recovery is very fast during the first 6 months but evidence shows that neuroplasticity can occur years following a stroke! Especially when the right type of rehabilitation services are provided! So there is constant hope for an ever changing and adapting brain!
